Self-Care over 9 Pillars of Joy

We have been exploring joy and love along the 8 + 1 pillars of joy as outlined by His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu in their collaboration, The Book of Joy. We have reflected on how perspective, humility, humor, acceptance, forgiveness, gratitude, compassion, and generosity (plus Bev’s addition of kindness) show up and influence our lives. Now, let’s consider how you care for yourself along those 9 pillars in life.

Are there ways to increase your perspective and simultaneously improve your well-being? Allow yourself to laugh and smile broadly…just how much joy does humor bring to you and your family and to your relationships? Regularly practicing gratitude gives back to you in at least seven ways including better relationships, better health, greater empathy and more. And generosity of course gives back to you as much as the act gives to others.

For moms, self-care often falls off the list of things to do, behind the kids, the family, the home, the pets, the chores, the yard, the car, the doctor appointments, piano lessons, play dates, carpool, and everything else. In fact, for many of us, it’s a dream that doesn’t come true, a wish that stays up in the stars, and a vision of the future that appears far, far away. But there are ways to make it happen, to make time and focus for yourself.

Bring your curiosity and skepticism and optimism and ideas to share, to grow, to reflect, and to learn with one another about self-care as moms, as women, as a community.
